Droid vs iPhone part 6 – final wrap-up
November 28, 2009

Well I’ve been rocking the Droid for two weeks now (and yeah, I’m gonna keep it!), so I figured I should make one final post concerning what I still like about it (or like even more), what’s starting to bug me, and what I miss about the iPhone. I also wanted to address the hit [...]

Droid vs. iPhone part 5 – Final Results! Droid wins! (For me, anyway)
November 16, 2009

Summary: Both the Droid and the iPhone are excellent portable internet devices/mini-computers, but I give the edge to the Droid because of the better network. Droid is a much better phone, but not as good a media player. So it depends on your needs – if, like me, you’re more concerned with the phone and [...]

Bye bye iPhone (bye-Phone?) – iPhone vs Droid part 4
November 12, 2009

Unbelievably, the reception/voice quality of my iPhone 3Gs was even worse than my original iPhone (2G). Even with 3 bars showing, I was unable to make or receive calls. When I switched off 3G, I was able to make and receive calls, but people sounded like they had mouths full of gravel. How bad was [...]

iPhone 3GS vs. Droid – Voice Quality showdown – part 2
November 9, 2009

First round of iPhone 3GS. Got a call this morning that I was unable to pick up (was about to park). A couple of observations – the ringer was much louder – that’s good! I was also impressed that I was receiving a call inside a parking garage – go 3G network go! Sadly I [...]

iPhone 3GS – does it have the Killer App?
November 8, 2009

I’ve had a 2G iPhone (calling the 1st generation “2G” is confusing but there you have it) for over 2 years and have been very happy with it – as an Internet device. As a  phone, it’s always left something to be desired. Lately however it’s been driving me batty. I’m not sure if it’s [...]

The State of Flash – SofTech Lecture
October 29, 2009

I gave a lecture last night (Oct. 28) on the current state of Flash – what’s happening with CS4 (inverse kinematics, motion editor), CS5 (iPhone porting), Flex/Flash Builder, FlashLite, etc. I’ve made a pdf of my powerpoint slides available. (If link not working due to WordPress weirdness, just try: ftp.evili.com/WhatIsFlash.pdf)

Android prototype coming soon?
February 11, 2008

According to this Info Week article, Texas Instruments will be showing off an Android phone prototype at the Mobile World Congress starting in Barcelona this week. I’ve got high hopes for Android (in fact, I’m entering the Android Developer contest). I spent half an hour this weekend trying to help a friend figure out how [...]

iPhone 1.1.3 upgrade a-ok on hacked phone – use your dock!
January 21, 2008

A “friend” who had jailbroken their original iPhone software (1.1.1), and was then afraid to upgrade to 1.1.2 after all the stories of iBricks surfaced, successfully upgraded to 1.1.3 this weekend. I was They were intrigued especially by the cel phone tower triangulation feature now built into maps, which actually does work pretty well. At [...]

The noPhone has arrived!
September 6, 2007

As I hoped/predicted, the “noPhone” (aka the iTouch) has arrived – a “phoneless” iPhone with Safari and Wifi, no AT&T, no monthly service charges. The only problem is it still uses Flash memory (I wanted a 160gig version). But still pretty cool…

Flash plug-in on the way for iPhone?
July 6, 2007

According to Walt Mossberg: “At launch, the iPhone version of the Safari browser is missing some plug-ins needed for playing common types of Web videos. The most important of these is the plug-in for Adobe’s Flash technology. Apple says it plans to add that plug-in through an early software update, which I am guessing will [...]
