Here are some links to some recent work (I did all programming unless otherwise noted).
Casual Flash games for AddictingGames.com
AddictingGames.com is one of the world’s largest sites for casual gaming, with an average of 20 million unique visits per month. I have an ongoing contract with AG to rapidly create news-based games. These games are generally based on current events of interest to our core demographic (12-18 year-old boys) and require extremely fast turnaround – while the stories are still hot. Frequently, I base the game on existing code and a large part of the challenge is to repurpose "engines" created in older versions of ActionScript (sometimes very old) that were never created with reuse in mind. Some of the games I’ve created are:
- Farmland – a 2.5D tile-based avatar game – Farmville plus lots of jokes. Includes astar pathfinding.
- Tiger’s Revenge – too risque for AG! Includes lots of physics – velocities, angles, gravity, friction, etc.
- Celebrity Body Scanner – one of the most popular games on AG
- NBA Shootout – more basic physics
- Spank Naughty Celebs 2009 – some velocity trickiness – the speed of the hand is based on how fast you drag the mouse
- Tiger Parking Slam – reviewed in Huffington Post and many other sources – we got the first Tiger Woods game out the door.
- The Vampire Quiz
- Dancing with the Supernovas – made heavy use of the new Inverse Kinematics feature of Flash CS4 – I did the character animation on this game as well as the programming.
- Shut Up Kanye – perhaps the silliest game I’ve built, this was the one that got me the job – was able to get this out within 3 days of Kanye’s upstaging of Taylor Swift. Well over 1 million unique visits so far.
BSSP Xmas Tetris
This game had to be built in a hurry – it was launched as part of an Advent calendar, so I had 3 days to put it together, with a true “drop dead” date. I looked around on Google, found some similiar existing code, and managed to shoehorn our graphics and sound into it, plus of course make the necessary functionality changes. The original code was old and procedural (and in German!), so it was a bit of a bear getting it all to work, but it was quicker than baking it from scratch. I feel like this is a good example of one of my major strengths – I’m a problem solver – it’s not perfect, but it got the job done. (Dec 2007)
